New This Week @ DPHSIMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

DPHS Granted Waiver for Flood Closure Days!

We have big news regarding the end-of-school year date! The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has granted David Prouty High School a waiver for the three remaining days that were due to be made up following the flood in December! On Tuesday, December 16, a broken pipe caused school to be canceled for five days prior to the holiday vacation, and set the district scrambling for a plan, especially as additional closures due to snow piled up.

Efforts to reclaim this lost time have included holding school on two days slated to be off the school-year calendar: January 29 (previously scheduled to be a full professional development day but held as a full day of school) and April 3 (what was scheduled to be the upcoming Good Friday holiday but now to be a full day of school AT DPHS ONLY--all other district schools are closed). Additionally, DPHS opted to forego holding mid-year exams, typically half days of school to accommodate the intensive grading that follows the weighty assessments, and this collectively helped reclaim several full days of instruction.

The four snow days that the entire district incurred will still need to be made up, so now all Spencer East Brookfield District schools will have their final day of the school year on Thursday, June 18th! Previous to the waiver approval, DPHS was going to have to remain in session until Wednesday, June 24th--but that is no longer necessary.

Thank you to Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Paul Haughey for his advocacy work with the state to make this waiver a reality. The high school building project, which depends on the campus being vacated to finalize several aspects of the project, will benefit from this timeline greatly and the lost time has been successfully rescheduled within the confines of the existing calendar!

Please see our updated calendar online, as well as our list of Important Dates & Reminders below!

Health Tips

March is National Nutrition Month, a great time to think about how important good nutrition is for our health and learning. What we eat during the day affects energy, focus, and overall mood. Choosing balanced meals with fruits, veggies, whole grains, and protein helps to keep our bodies and minds fueled.
Skip drinks that are high in calories and sugar and replace them with water. A large Strawberry Dragonfruit Dunkin' refresher has 37 grams of sugar, which is roughly 9 teaspoons of sugar! This is higher than the recommended daily maximum intake of 25 grams of added sugar.
The choices we make about food and beverages can fuel and support our bodies and overall well-being.

Please call or email the nurse with any questions or concerns!
