🚩 Universal Play and Disc Golf Pros Visit David Prouty High School!

On Tuesday, September 22, Uplay Disc Golf - a non-profit whose mission is "To promote health and well-being and enhance communities through disc golf education for all" and which was founded in 2017 by pro disc golfer Zoe An Dyke, shared some of their touring professional coaches with our school as guest instructors for some Physical Education classes to introduce students to the fundamentals of disc golf. The high-energy, interactive session included demonstrations and skill-building drills for students to try from some of the best professional players in the world, creating a great memorable experience for each student involved. DPHS received two portable baskets and 90 discs (30 starter sets) our coaches use for teaching, plus our Uplay curriculum book. Uplay also provides a free ticket link for every student, staff member, and their families (2 tickets per person) to attend the Disc Golf Pro Tour event in Leicester this weekend (see below).
Thanks to our PE staff, Mrs. Johanna Fazio, and Mr. Tab Bassett, who organized this special event, and to the Uplay organization and the visiting pros who dedicated this time to share with our students.
Uplay is extending a very generous offer with everyone--students, parents/guardians, faculty, and staff--in the DPHS school community: free tickets to attend this weekend's Disc Golf Pro Tournament at Maple Hill Disc Golf Course in Leicester! Just click HERE for two free tickets!
Interested in learning more? You can follow @uplaydiscgolf on social media and visit www. uplaydiscgolf.org to learn more!
Thank you to Uplay and each of the individuals who took time out of their busy schedules to share their expertise with our community!
Stay tuned for information on an Open House where the public is welcome to tour the new facility, coming soon!
Once we are fully operational and announce a date, we hope to see anyone and everyone from our district towns who has been part of and watched this incredible project take shape, and who we hope to see utilize this beautiful facility in the years to come. We hope to become a community center in the truest sense of the word!

A New Face to the SEBRSD
Written By: Marketing students Julie Tong, DPHS Sophomore & Devin Smith, DPHS Sophomore
Meet Spencer Police Officer James J. Murphy, School Resource Officer for the Spencer East Brookfield Regional School District.
For more than 20 years Officer Murphy, or Murph as most people know him, has served in the public safety field starting his career at the UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. From there he served 13 years with the Leicester Police Department before making the move to Spencer to be the School Resource Officer (SRO).
“So far, it’s been great. The kids and faculty in all three schools are helpful and respectful,” stated Officer Murphy. “I travel between David Prouty High School [DPHS], Knox Trail, and Wire Village but spend the majority of my time at the high school.” As a first-year SRO, Officer Murphy has his own workspace on the second floor of DPHS, right next to the cafeteria. Stop by his office and you’ll notice his pride and adoration for the Boston Red Sox and his Irish heritage proudly displayed by pennants and shamrocks. He excitedly makes his rounds to all three schools throughout his days, interacting with students and bridging the gap between law enforcement and the children of our community.
“My father was a Worcester Fire Fighter, so growing up I saw the difference he and the other fire fighters made in the community,” said Murphy. “I think as a police officer, I felt I could make a positive impact.”
And that’s his role. Officer Murphy thinks of himself as a preventative measure, helping students with challenges before it escalates to a criminal level. “I like meeting new people and want to make a difference with the younger generation in the community,” said Officer Murphy. “I like when the kids want to talk with me or show me their work. It helps them to be more comfortable with me as a police officer and with a police presence in general.”
Officer Murphy welcomes all students and faculty to stop by and say hello. He’s looking forward to making an impact on all students as he begins his journey here. We thank him and our other local police officers for their help and support in keeping us safe.

🗓️ Important Information!
☝️ Important Information for Parents / Guardians:
The DPHS Student Handbook is posted on our website. Please be sure you are looking through it for information on important aspects of DPHS operations, like:
Dismissal Procedures--parents / guardians must send a written, signed, dated note to school in order for us to release a student. Phone calls and emails are not permitted as they do not allow us to verify identity. Even students who are 18 need parental permission to sign themselves out.
Attendance Procedures--be aware of the impact attendance has on credits and how to avoid the pitfalls of excessive attendance. Regular attendance is not just a DPHS preference, it's the law.
Absent Notification--any student whose parent / guardian has not called them out for the day will have a phone call sent home to verify the absence.
Behavioral Expectations--it's important that students and families are aware of behavioral expectations so they can be reinforced and understood. While standards might be different at home or in different places in a student's life, it is very important that they understand at school, expectations that are in place are based on safety, security, and the incredible responsibility we have for maintaining a learning environment that supports everyone!
Food and Beverage--students will not be permitted to consume anything but water after the end of first period. Due to our grab-and-go breakfast process, we allow students first period to consume their breakfast. After this time, because of the consistent issues with trash, insects / mice or other pests attracted by food (which is costly to remediate), damage done by liquids and food on furniture and technology, as well as keeping the halls safe from slippery spills, students must be done or throw out coffee, food, or any beverages than water. Please help support this expectation to keep this brand-new facility clean and looking beautiful!
Medications Policy--it is critical that students receive any medication that they require, and our handbook has details on how to safely and appropriately document and provide this medication while in school.
Tardy-to-School Procedures--students arriving late disrupt the learning of others and "on time" means IN first period when the 7:45 a.m. bell rings. The bell system is automated and synced to standard cell phone time. Whether a student is on time is determined by this clock system. Students arriving to school by car should allow extra time for traffic, flat tires, or other things that may delay their arrival. Two free tardies per quarter are given for these or similar circumstances, but if students use them for no reason, they will be held to the expectation that a detention is served for the third and every subsequence tardy. ANY arrival after 8:00 a.m. is issued a tardy and there are no free passes for students arriving this late.
Our 2026-2027 Student Handbook is posted on our website and is the responsibility of every student and parent / guardian to read and acknowledge through Family ID. Failure to submit the electronic acknowledgement does not preclude students from being held accountable to the handbook expectations or district policies.

Early Education & Care (EEC) III / EEC IV Students Join Cubs' Corner Pre-School for PE!
On Wednesday, Mr. Leroux from Cubs’ Corner, which is the district's preschool, as well as EBES invited our Juniors and Seniors to join his preschoolers for Physical Education play! Students had the opportunity to assist with parachute activities and enjoy the new playground alongside our youngest learners.
This is our first example of the meaningful, authentic learning opportunities that will naturally develop as the Preschool settles into its new home at David Prouty. Our EEC students are excited to build connections, share their skills, and collaborate with our new neighbors!
Thank you for sharing the joy of a parachute with us, Mr. Leroux!

EEC Exploratory Stages of Play Lab Stations

Freshmen Exploratory students in Early Education & Care participated in a hands-on station lab using a variety of preschool toys and games. At each station, students explored the toys and identified the cognitive types of play that children could engage in while playing. Students also considered the social stages of play each toy or game allows or encourages, from solitary and parallel play to associative and cooperative play. This activity gave students a look at familiar toys from their childhood and helped them to understand how play supports children’s development!
EEC III and IV Lab Design and Budget
Juniors and Seniors in Early Education and Care are putting their skills into action as they help design the new EEC Lab in the Preschool wing! Students are revisiting concepts from the 10th Grade Classroom Design Unit while considering how classroom layout, furniture, materials, and learning centers can support young children’s development. They are also learning to create and manage a real classroom budget, researching supplies and making purchasing decisions that will directly impact our preschool environment. This hands-on experience gives students an authentic opportunity to practice the skills of an early childhood educator while contributing to a classroom they will actually use for learning, observation, and hands-on experiences!

Information for 9th Grade Families about the CTE Exploratory Rotations!
Our Freshmen are into their second CTE Exploratory Rotation as of this past Monday, September 21! As students move through Quarter 1, they will be continuing to experience the four Career Technical Education (CTE) programs offered at David Prouty High School and are learning more about their own interests, strengths, and skills.
A Quick Reminder About Missing Work: If your student has missing work from Rotation 1, please encourage them to check their assignments and submit everything by the end of class tomorrow, Friday, September 18th. Once a rotation ends, late work will not be accepted for that rotation.
Student Reflections: At the end of each rotation, students will complete a short Exploratory Reflection Form. These reflections help students document what they learned, what they enjoyed, what challenged them, and what they may want to explore further. We encourage students to think beyond “I liked it” or “I didn't like it.” Asking why can help them better understand their own interests and make a more informed CTE program choice at the end of Quarter 1!
Please review the schedule below to see which program your student will be exploring next:
Exploratory Section | Teacher | Rotation 2 |
9/21 - 10/5 | ||
1 | Mr. Barnett | MKT, 307 |
2 | Ms. Leveillee | ES, 225 |
3 | Ms. Murray | EEC, 118 |
4 | Mrs. St. Onge | CJ, 241 |
Why Exploratory?
Students do not need to know what career they want after high school. That's one of the reasons Exploratory is so valuable! Through their rotations, students have the opportunity to try new things, experience different career fields, and discover skills and interests they may not have known they had.
Even when a program doesn't seem connected to a student's future plans, CTE helps develop transferable skills such as:
Communication & teamwork
Problem-solving & critical thinking
Responsibility & professionalism
Organization & time management
Creativity & adaptability
Hands-on & technical skills
Career and workplace awareness
A student might discover a career they love—or discover something they don't want to pursue. They might also find a skill from one program that they carry into an entirely different career!
All of these are valuable outcomes of Exploratory.
We encourage families to ask students about each rotation: What did you do? What did you learn? What surprised you? What was challenging? What would you like to try again?
Most importantly, remind your student that they don't have to know what they want to be when they grow up…
That's what Exploratory is for!
Thank you for supporting your student as they explore the many opportunities available through CTE at David Prouty High School!
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to myself, administration, guidance, or the following CTE Instructors:

Thank you to all those summer course participants who completed their feedback forms! We appreciate your input! The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, including students reporting that they felt challenged, supported, that it felt scary at first but they learned they were capable! That's what Early College High School is designed to help students do: learn about themselves, help provide healthy stretching of their academic muscles to see what they're capable of doing and get some college credits "in the bank" before even leaving high school!
Is Early College High School for YOU? 🫵
Are you a student who knows they want college and wants to get a head start on credits FREE of cost? Early College High School is for you because all the benefits of college coursework is right here at DPHS, while you finish high school and enjoy your high school years!
Are you a student who isn't sure college is for them? Early College High School is for you because you can take classes, RISK FREE, COST FREE and find out if you might actually be a great fit for pursuing traditional education beyond high school!
Are you a student for who college wasn't a given because you assumed you couldn't afford it? Early College is for you because you can take multiple courses for FREE right here at DPHS which saves having to pay for them later on your own!
Are you a student who just never considered college because you didn't think you would be up to the challenge? Early College is for you because while you take ECHS courses, you have both your high school and your college teachers helping you meet the challenge! What better way to learn how capable you are!
Are you a student who just never thought about college for a number of reasons? Early College High School is for you because you have access to real college courses, real college credit, and real college experiences while still having the security of all the support you get in high school. Talk to your counselor about the possibilities, which are as endless as your dreams for the future!

Did you know that DPHS is an officially-designated Early College High School? This means that students at David Prouty have access to college classes that bear college credit while attending DPHS. These courses carry fully-transferrable credit that gives them a head start on college coursework which can impact both time and financial burdens!
Thanks to a generous grant from the state, we have been able to implement this program to benefit students across all grade levels as they're given opportunities that inspire them to consider college options, take field trips to college campuses, attend summer school, get college credits during summer months, and be exposed to speakers and presentations that help them realize the potential that a college-track future provides!
Ask a counselor for more information on the Early College High School program and keep your eyes open for the opportunities brought to our students by this awesome program!

Stay in the KNOW on the GO!
Attendance Matters!
Remember there are real, impactful consequences to missing a lot of school. Losing credits, falling behind day to day, and court involvement are all potential consequences to not attending school regularly.
Parents / guardians play a key role in supporting your child and preparing them for a successful future. Engaging children in learning so they are equipped and feel empowered for the next steps in life after graduation starts with attending school regularly.
Regular school attendance is critical to student success, not just academically, but for social/ emotional health, as well. Excessive school absences not only cause students to fall behind academically but can also cause anxiety issues when returning to school, due to missed lessons and make-up work. In addition, peer relationships can be negatively impacted.
For students suffering with school-avoidance or other struggles that make regular attendance a challenge, please reach out to our counseling staff (see contact information below in Counseling) or the main office. There is a lot of support and we want to see students succeed!
There are so many opportunities to get involved at Prouty! The high school experience is enhanced by getting involved in activities or sports that you think you might (or already!) enjoy, and finding or deepening connections with classmates and friends of all grades!
