SPENCER, MA – The Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District is proud to announce that Matthew McNicol has been named the recipient of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents (M.A.S.S.) Academic Achievement Award for the 2025-2026 academic year. This prestigious honor is reserved for students who demonstrate exceptional academic focus alongside significant contributions to their school and community.
A standout student at David Prouty High School, Matthew has maintained a rigorous academic schedule, consistently earning High Honors while excelling in multiple Advanced Placement (AP) courses. His intellectual curiosity and dedication to the sciences have previously earned him the Rensselaer Medal, the Telegram & Gazette Student of the Week award, and the esteemed “18 Under 18” recognition.
“Matthew is a remarkable example of what it means to be both academically driven and deeply committed to service,” Superintendent of Schools, Paul Haughey, noted in his commendation.
Matthew’s leadership extends far beyond the classroom. He serves as the Student Council Vice President and Class Secretary, and is a vital member of the National Honor Society. A versatile three-sport varsity athlete in soccer, indoor track, and outdoor track, Matthew also flourishes in the arts as an accomplished alto saxophonist for the UMass Honors Band and local jazz ensembles.
Deeply rooted in service, Matthew serves as a lead altar server, a Project 351 Ambassador, and a dedicated caregiver to his grandparents. With plans to pursue biology and health sciences, Matthew embodies the resilience and character the M.A.S.S. award seeks to celebrate.
