SPENCER, MA – Superintendent of Schools, Paul Haughey, is pleased to announce that David Prouty High School will officially reopen for students and staff on Monday, January 5, 2026, with a two-hour delayed opening.
Following a collaborative effort between Colliers, Fontaine Brothers, local inspectional services, and safety officials from the Spencer Fire Department, the facility has been fully cleared for occupancy. The district assures parents, students, and families that the building is safe and fully equipped to resume teaching and learning operations.
Reopening Schedule for Monday, January 5, 2026:
School Start Time: 9:45 AM (Delayed Opening)
Bus Transportation: Student pickup will occur later than the regularly scheduled time.
School Day: Students will follow a delayed opening schedule.
Dining Services: Lunch will be served to all students.
Principal LeFreniere will issue a follow-up communication shortly containing the specific modified bell schedule for the day.
"I want to extend my sincere gratitude to our local fire department, inspectional services, and our dedicated construction team at Fontaine Brothers for their tireless work together over the last two weeks," said Superintendent of Schools Paul Haughey. "Their partnership has been vital in ensuring a safe return to the classroom for our staff and students."

Spencer, MA – December 16, 2025 – A sprinkler main line burst on the second floor of David Prouty High School today at approximately 12:30 p.m., causing significant water damage to the second and main floors of the building.
Emergency personnel, including the local police and fire departments, responded immediately to assist with the orderly and safe evacuation and dismissal of all students, supported by our transportation vendor, AA Transportation.
Following the dismissal, school district personnel, Colliers, Fontaine Brothers, and local safety officials worked collaboratively to assess the damage, determine the cause, and initiate cleanup efforts.
Due to the damage and ongoing repairs, David Prouty High School will be closed tomorrow, December 17th, 2025. No access to the facility will be permitted while cleanup crews work to restore the property.
An update regarding the school's reopening will be provided once all repairs are complete and local safety officials have cleared the facility for occupancy.
All other schools - East Brookfield Elementayr School, Wire Village School, and Knox Trail Middle School - within the Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District will operate on a regular schedule tomorrow, Wednesday, December 17th, 2025.
