Student of the Week!

Congratulations to Martina Ethier of David Prouty High School in Spencer, the Telegram & Gazette Student of the Week.

Martina was the top vote-getter in a field of four strong candidates.

The T&G asked high school principals, teachers, and guidance counselors to nominate students they say have shown outstanding school achievement and community service.

Martina was nominated by Paul Haughey, superintendent of the Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District. He wrote: "Martina, a junior, is the class historian for the 11th grade. She is also the president of the Student Council and a member of the National Honor Society. Martina takes her academics very seriously and is in all honors classes as well as three AP classes. After school, she plays on the varsity soccer and basketball teams. This year, she is the captain of the basketball team. Outside of school, Martina is a coach at Girls on the Run. She finds it very fulfilling to work with younger kids and see them grow each year. After high school, Martina plans on pursuing her passion for history by going to college to be a history teacher. Her love for history comes from her grandfather, who was a town historian for Auburn."

Others nominated this week:

Summaries submitted by schools.

Ronnie Agyemang, South High Community School: Ronnie's glowing personality has a contagious energy, making him a positive presence wherever he goes. With a genuine warmth and welcoming attitude, the South High senior greets new students with a big smile and a sincere “hello,” helping them feel at ease as they transition into the school environment. His friendly demeanor and approachable nature make him an instant favorite among both peers and staff. An avid Celtic fan, Ronnie’s enthusiasm for his team often extends to his school life, where his passion for sports and physical activity shines through. Just as Jayson Tatum has been a standout for the Celtics this year, Ronnie has been a bigger standout Teaching Assistant (TA) for the Physical Education department. Ronnie has gone above and beyond, assisting teachers by demonstrating lessons, showing students proper techniques and encouraging everyone to stay active. He excels at helping students develop their physical skills while ensuring that everyone feels included and motivated to participate. Whether it’s organizing games or offering individual tips, Ronnie’s dedication to promoting health, teamwork and fun is evident in all of his interactions. His positive energy not only keeps his classmates engaged but also inspires them to push themselves to be their best, making him a valued and influential member of the school community.

Michael Barrientos, Clinton High School: Michael, a junior, has exceptional initiative and leadership. While working at the Clinton High School Blood Drive, he was reading the daily bulletin, discovered and applied to the CHNA 9 Youth Advisory Council, earning a spot as one of only 11 selected students. This council advocates for critical issues including mental health awareness, homelessness, and educational access throughout Massachusetts. Recently, Michael volunteered to deliver a speech on diversity to an audience that included U.S. Rep. James McGovern and several state senators and representatives. With support from his teachers (Mr. Moisan, Mrs. Ford, Mrs. Elliot, and Mr. Young), he overcame his nervousness and represented our school admirably. Michael exemplifies initiative, courage, and dedication to positive change. He plans to apply these new leadership skills to help make CHS an even more inclusive environment for everyone.

Makayla Ofori, Abby Kelley High School: Makayla, a junior, is a long-standing member of the National Honor Society and is co-founder of the high school's STEM Club. She is also actively involved in athletics and other school and community programs. Makayla is actively preparing to become a neurosurgeon by excelling in a rigorous high school program of study. Makayla was recently accepted into the distinguished THRIVE Scholars Program, and we could not be more proud of her. Makayla would like to thank her mom and dad for their efforts in helping her to succeed.
